HDW currently employes around 2300 staff. Since January 2005, the Kiel-based company Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH has been part of the ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems shipbuilding group.
The headquarters of the shipbuilding group is in Hamburg. Other operating locations are Emden, Karlskrona and Malmö (Sweden), and Scaramanga (Greece).
